Check the licence category before travelling

Thai government guidance identifies recognised licence categories, including Thai licences, applicable International Driving Permits and licences from ASEAN member countries. Requirements depend on the licence and driver’s circumstances. English wording does not automatically make every foreign licence valid.

Prepare your documents

Check with your licensing authority or Thailand’s Department of Land Transport which permit, if any, is required in your circumstances. Where required, carry the IDP with your original domestic licence and passport. Check the vehicle category and expiry dates.

UDON CAR RENT requirements

All drivers must be at least 25, named in the agreement and present original documents. Company policy asks for an IDP where a licence is not in English; this collection rule does not replace checking legal driving eligibility. Contact staff before paying if unsure.

If you need a Thai driving licence

Always carry your home licence together with an International Driving Permit (IDP). If you stay in Thailand long term or move here, we recommend getting a Thai licence; check the current rules with the Department of Land Transport.

Allow a full day. Start at the Land Transport office, about 20 km from Udon Thani towards Khon Kaen (GPS 17.269737, 102.878867).

A medical certificate is available from most clinics and hospitals for roughly 100–300 THB depending on where you go. The certificate of address is issued by Immigration, which in Udon Thani is at the police station on Posri / Srisuk road (GPS 17.406452, 102.788965).

Last checked September 2026; please check locations and fees again before you go.
